A Family Diwali

Diwali is the Indian “Festival of Light,” where candles and lamps signify not only the triumph of good over evil but also food, gossip, and good company. This is Megan’s “second family,” and I ate their food. There was a lighting ceremony as well, but bad traffic on 183 made us miss it.

At their home, Diwali–or parties in general–come in three parts: The women, the men, and the boys.

[The women talk and drink chai tea; This is their party.]

diwali-men

[The men read, talk, and watch TV. They wait for the women.]
