Soundslides: CIW Burger King Protest

As an offshoot to the Latin American conference on Friday, Lucas Benitez of a Florida labor group led a number of students from UT and Kansas to protest at the local Burger King. Benitez’s association is attempting to convince major agricultural buyers to regulate farm worker conditions and pay one cent more per pound of tomatoes picked.A bit rough in the edges, but my first “quick” attempt to put audio with pictures. In particular, it needs a firmer ending–I had originally planned to do interviews with the people at Burger King, but haven’t been successful in convincing anyone to speak on the record. It’s a shame too; the workers (and even the managers) at the franchise are in many ways similar to the agricultural workers and have similar concerns and problems; I think it would have been a good thing to be able to show the complexities of protesting a system without demonizing the wrong people.Collecting audio at the same time as photographs is difficult; I’ll need to figure out a more elegant way to hang all the wires, straps and cords around me without getting tangled up. Also, I need a shotgun mic that I can fit in a pocket, if such a thing exists. The photos from the slideshow are below.
